English 201: Intermediate Composition
The Rhetoric of Education
University of Wisconsin-Madison
Spring 2025

Rhetoric is not only integral to developing your skills as a writer and communicator. It is also entangled with your education more broadly because the history of rhetoric highlights an ongoing focus on pedagogy—the term used to describe the theory and practice of education. In this course, we will reflect together on the importance of education in our contemporary moment by engaging texts from rhetorical and educational theorists about the role of rhetoric in education. We will pursue questions about the actual and ideal aims of education, including: is education solely about learning technical skills that helps students prepare for the upcoming labor force? if so, are writing skills simply technical skills for social and economic advancement? or is there something more to education that cannot be captured in the logics of technical advancement and marketplaces?
